Eleven ships set sail from Portsmouth, England on the 13th May, 1787. They are know as the First Fleet. They landed at Botany Bay between the 18th and the 20th of January, 1788. Click on the "Charlotte" to learn more about each ship.
What did they take with them?
The First Fleet took over 8 months to sail from England to Australia. The eleven ships carried over 1300 people. That's alot of mouths to feed! When they reached Australian shores they had to have enough equipment and food to set up a colony. They couldn't buy anything in Australia as there were no shops. If they forgot somthing it would take almost one and a half years to sail back to England and return with it. Click on the barrels to find a list of all the supplies the First Fleet carried.
You be the judge!
At this site you become the Govenor of NSW. You have to choose 3 convicts to pardon (let free). To do this you will need to find out what each convict did, what their skills are and work out if they would be the best 3 to help you set up your new colony. You will need to present your work to the class and justify (say why) you chose the convicts you did.
